After maintaining a competitive-yet-small roster in 2019, this year’s men’s track and field team received an infusion of fresh blood in the form of 17 new freshmen, which almost doubled the team’s size from last year.
The new energy can be seen in the sprinting section, led by Captain Sam Pomerantz ’20, which includes Nick Ng ’23, Corey Jones ’23 and Josh Harmsen ’23. These three freshmen, along with Hugo Frost ’22, have each placed in almost every meet of the season, and will surely continue to excel in outdoor meets with the addition of Sam Robinson ’20.
Led by Captains Jake Colangelo ’20, Frank Zuroski ’20 and Conor Courtney ’20, the mid-distance team, has also run a number of great performances this season. Lucas Wright ’21, who competed in both Indoor and Outdoor Nationals in 2019, has gone undefeated in every 800 he has run so far and will be looking to repeat his NESCAC 800 victory in the spring.
The distance team, led by Captain Pete Ross ’20, unfortunately, saw a number of injuries this season. It was kept afloat largely by the consistently excellent performances of Andrew Harrell ’23 and Craig Feist ’23. Harrell, who stayed mostly on the sidelines during cross country due to both injury and illness, is in the midst of his breakout season, during which he ran a 4:24.92 in the mile and 8:49.8 in the 3k, the latter which earned him a Regionals qualification.
Sometimes experience does triumph over youth, such as in the case of Captain Ty Kunzman ’20. Kunzman recently broke his own school record in the weight throw with a distance of 18.23 meters, a throw which will most likely take him to Nationals.
Although a group of the top performers is still competing indoors this weekend at Boston University and next week at Regionals, most of the team is now looking ahead towards outdoor track and field. The season will include three home meets, most notably the NESCAC Championships on Saturday, April 25th.
