The Super Bowl crashed Twitter. If you were not avidly checking your feed during the big game you may not have noticed, but the app had a 10-minute outage during Rihanna’s halftime show. Despite this, millions of tweets were sent out during the show and the rest of the game. Let’s recap some of the big game’s best moments with some of the best tweets of the night.
The Turf
Before the big game, the NFL announced how the field would look. This was a big deal as there is an ongoing feud between the players and owners over the types of surfaces, mainly turf, that should be used for games. The field was a new type of grass that had been grown locally in Arizona for the past two years and cost over $800,000.
A new mechanism was added to State Farm field to wheel out the grass every day after it had been installed so it could get the correct amount of sunlight. Despite all this, the field was terrible during the game. Players on the sidelines during water breaks could be heard complaining about the field. Some comments made after the game included players calling the field “kind of terrible” and saying it was like “playing on a water park.” Videos of players slipping and sliding over the field permeated the internet.
The Referees
The referees in this game stole the show. Often the names thrown around during the Superbowl are those of the players and coaches. And yet multiple times during the game, Carl Cheffers was trending on Twitter. He is neither a player nor a coach, he was the head referee. Many late game calls went against the Eagles, leading many to believe that the referees were favoring the Chiefs. The most blatant of these being a holding call on the Eagles during the game-winning drive.
While this was later debunked by the Eagles player as a correct call, many other calls were miscalled. The NFL in recent years has had a referee problem, with many fans complaining about how much power the referees have. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell answered questions about refereeing last weekend stating, “I don’t think it’s ever been better in the league.”
Rihanna
The main reason your friends and family watched the game, the half time show. After little content from the singer for the last 6 years, Rihanna made her dramatic return to preforming. But it was not just her who stole the show. Her Amercian Sign Language performer, Justina Miles, went viral for her energetic and iconic performance along with being the first female deaf performer.
And yes, Rihanna is pregnant with her second child, the concert being the first time we have seen the baby bump. It was later confirmed by her agent and many other news sources. The show was the biggest viewership since Katy Perry in 2015 with 118.7 million viewers.
