On Sunday, Oct. 1, the OneLove Club on campus hosted Yards for Yeardley on Love Field. The event was a one mile walk around the track and raised awareness for relationship abuse and identifying the signs of health and unhealthy relationships. At the event there was the opportunity to donate money which would go to OneLove. People could also monetarily support the organization through a GoFundMe link that was included in the event’s promotional email.
It was founded at Hamilton last year to promote safety within relationships. The event this past weekend was organized by Maizley Tone ’26 and Will Rice ’24. The OneLove Club is a national nonprofit whose mission is to end relationship abuse. The foundation was created in 2010 to honor the death of Yeardley Love. It aims to inform young people about the differences between healthy and unhealthy relationships through compelling films and candid conversations. Between 30 and 40 people showed up for Yards for Yeardley. Some came with groups of friends and some came as a part of sports teams or as volunteers.
At the event there was music for the walk, and Dunkin Donut munchkins and coffee for the participants. Sophie Commandeur ’27 said that she liked seeing so many people turn out to show support for a great cause. Mathew Dooley ’27 said that, “the large crowd of students at the walk was an important show of support, and made me realize that this is a cause that the Hamilton community really cares about.”The event appeared to be a valuable experience for those who attended, suggesting Hamilton students care about promoting healthy relationships.
OneLove will host more events to promote healthy relationships on campus. Other campus groups and resources exist to support those facing unhealthy relationships. Survivors Making Activism and Radical Transformation (SMART) aims to hold the College accountable for sexual assault and create a space for survivors to have a voice. The Office of Communitiy Standards includes the Title IX coordinator, Catherine Berryman, to support students in the event of sexual harrassment or assault.
