Based on the novel of the same name by Taylor Jenkins Reed (author of
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo
,
Malibu Rising
),
Daisy Jones & the Six
, a 12-episode mini-series adaptation, will be released on Amazon Prime Video on March 3. Here is everything you need to know before watching the show.
The novel was published in 2019 and tells the story of a fictional band, chronicling their rise to fame and subsequent fall from grace. The story is told through a series of interviews conducted decades after the band’s split, with first-hand accounts telling the story of Daisy Jones, Billy Dunne and the rest of The Six — particularly, the love triangle between Daisy, Billy and Billy’s wife, Camilla. Drawing parallels between similar drama-fueled bands such as Fleetwood Mac, Jenkins creates an incredibly believable world that left fans wishing they could hear the songs written out by Jenkins throughout the story.
This dream came closer to being a reality when Reese Witherspoon’s production company Hello Sunshine (
Little Fires Everywhere, Where The Crawdads Sing
) announced they were working with Amazon Prime Video to adapt the novel into a documentary-style limited series. Along with the series, a full-length album,
Aurora
, is set to be released on March 3, featuring songs written in collaboration with artists such as Phoebe Bridgers and performed by the show’s actors.
The show stars Riley Keough (Elvis Presley’s grand-daughter) as Daisy Jones, Sam Claflin (
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Love, Rosie
) as Billy Dunne and Camilla Morrone (
Death Wish
) as Camilla Dunne. Keough and Claflin, who play the frontmen of the fictional band, both came into their roles with incredibly limited musical experience. Claflin recalled being asked to sing a Beatles song for his audition but could not think of a single one (
New York Times
), while Keough, though being related to the “King of Rock ‘N Roll,” had little to no musical training. Claflin had to learn how to play guitar to fit into his role, and took voice lessons with Keough in order to sing lead vocals on
Aurora
.
This is one of the highest anticipated book adaptations of 2023, and early reviews are giving fans hope, with critics praising Keough and Claflin’s performances and the undeniable chemistry between the two. It’s no secret that this show has a lot to get right, from the 1970s setting to giving life to the band’s sound to keeping Jenkin’s original story intact. Witherspoon took interest in the adaptation before the novel was even released, and fans can find comfort in the success of the other book-to-screen adaptations under her belt. Hopefully, the series will live up to readers’ high expectations.
