Dear Hamilton Community,
The White House recently announced they would handpick the members of the press pool that can ask President Trump questions. Earlier this month, the White House banned the Associated Press (AP) from accessing the Oval Office, leading AP to sue 3 White House officials. Yesterday, a judge rejected AP’s request for immediate access.
As a student news organization, The Spectator is concerned about the recent developments limiting transparency between the Trump Administration and the press. We would like to reiterate the sentiments expressed by the White House Correspondents Association that “In a free country, leaders must not be able to choose their own press corps.”
In fulfilling the Hamilton College mission of active citizenship, we urge all students to stay aware of the unfolding policies in Washington that threaten the freedoms we take for granted.
Sincerely,
The Spectator Editors in Chief
