On Saturday, Feb. 1, the Hamilton College women’s hockey team hosted №2 Middlebury for their annual benefit game. The charity chosen for this year’s game was The Special Forces Charitable Trust (SFCT). The goal of SFCT is to provide meaningful support to families of Green Berets. The SFCT provides financial support to programs that promote healthy living styles of the U.S. Army Special Forces and their families.
A GoFundMe page was set up by the hockey team to get donations that will go directly to the SFCT. The team has raised more than $5,800, which is more than double their original $2,500 goal. They also sold raffle tickets during the game, and all of that money will go to the SFCT. The executive director of the SFCT, David T. Guernsey Jr., was invited to the game to do the ceremonial puck drop.
The Hamilton College Continentals came into the game very confident after beating the №2 Middlebury Panthers in a 2–0 win the night before. The Continentals handed the Panthers their first shutout and just their second loss of the season. The Continentals, however, were not able to continue their five game win streak in their rematch with Middlebury.
After no scoring in the first period, the Panthers came out strong in the second quarter, scoring two goals within the first 11 minutes of the period. The Continentals were not able to reciprocate the scoring and eventually fell short to the Panthers 3–0.
The Hamilton women’s hockey team is currently sixth in the NESCAC and are still keeping their eyes on the NESCAC championship, which Hamilton has never won before. The Continentals travel to Waterville, Maine this weekend to take on the Colby Mules for two more NESCAC matches on Friday, Feb. 7 and Saturday, Feb. 8.
