Men’s Lacrosse
The Hamilton men’s lacrosse team is hoping to improve after last year’s season, in which they finished 5–9. Hamilton’s leading goal-scorer for the 2019 season, Henry Hunt ’20, will be returning for his senior season and hopes to continue to make an impact in the Continentals’ lineup. Hunt started all 14 games for the Continentals last season, and he led the team with 37 goals and tied with graduated senior Chad Morse ’19 for the team high 14 assists. Hamilton’s primary goalkeeper, Max Scheidl ’21 will also be returning for the 2019 season. Scheidl started in 12 games for the Continentals and was top-ten in the NESCAC with 120 saves. He was also named to the NESCAC Spring All-Academic Team. The men’s lacrosse team will begin their season on Feb. 29 in Amherst, Massachusetts where they will face the Amherst College Mammoths before having their first home game against Utica College.
Women’s Lacrosse
The women’s lacrosse team is coming off of a 5–10 2019 season, in which they won two conference games against #14 Bowdoin College and Connecticut College. The team graduated two members selected for the 2019 NESCAC Conference Team, so they will be counting on the incoming freshman to make an immediate impact. Starting goalkeeper Hannah Burral ’19 was among the graduates, so Coach Patty Kloidt will be looking for Megan O’Hara ’21 or Maggie Reville ’22 to take her crucial role as goalkeeper. Offensively, the team will be counting on Tessa Ryan ’21 and Skyler Simson ’20 who scored 23 and 21 goals last season, respectively. Honor Gabriel ’21 had the most assists of the returners, so the team will look to her in the opponent’s circles. The Continentals’ women’s lacrosse team will start their season on their home field, Steuben Field, on Feb. 29 against Amherst College and play three other games before heading to Englewood, Florida for spring break.
Men’s and Women’s Rowing
Hamilton’s men’s and women’s rowing teams are coming off successful 2019 spring seasons. Coach Jim Lister is currently in his first full year as the head coach, after being hired in January 2019. The men’s team had three second place finishes last season including the New York State Collegiate Championships. The varsity eight boat has five returners in addition to coxswain Haley Raphael ’20. The women’s team made their second appearance in the NCAA Division III National Championships last spring, finishing sixth out of eight teams. The Continentals graduated only two members of the varsity eight crew, so they are aiming for similar success this season. Key returners are former all-NESCAC selections, Ann-Sophie Koglin ’20 and Perrin Salewood ’21. The teams will spend their spring break in Clemson, South Carolina to train for their upcoming races. Both teams first races will be on April 4 and 5 in Shrewsbury, Massachsettes at the Lake Quinsigamond Series.
Men’s and Women’s Tennis
Men’s and women’s tennis both look to continue their strong fall season this spring. For the men, Junior Rob Dotterer ’21 will enter the spring coming off of a hot fall. After starting as a top 16 seed, Dotterer reached the quarterfinals of the 2019 ITA Division III Men’s Northeast Regional Championships singles main draw in September. The men’s team will also benefit from 5 strong juniors returning from abroad for their spring season: Jafar Sharipov ’21, Max Zimmerman ’21, Matt May ’21, Eamon Gibbons ’21, and Tim Derby ’21. The men will have their first match on Mar. 7 at Hobart in Geneva, NY. The junior players also look to lead the women’s team. Sophia Aulicino ’21, who plays №1 singles, currently leads the team with 31 career wins. She made the second team all conference for singles and ranked 50 in the ITA Division III singles rankings. Aulicino and Audrey Chor ’21 teamed up last year for the doubles draw, went 13–10 on the season and reached the semifinals at the Northeast regionals. Underclassman Kat Roberts ’22, Sarah Bargamian ’22, Becca Ingber ’22, and Lauren Holtzman ’23 will also be threats for the Continental in 2020. The women will make their spring debut on Mar. 8 in Rochester, NY at Rochester Institute of Technology.
Softball
The Hamilton softball team is hoping for another successful spring after a record-breaking 2019 spring season. The Continentals are coming off of a 28–10, 7–5 NESCAC season, where they broke the overall Hamilton College record for most wins in a season. After being the second seed in the West division, they also appeared in their first NESCAC championship. Returning this season is outfielder Emily Fraser ’20 who was voted to the all-NESCAC first team last season. Morgan Hartranft ’22 and Kendall Searcy ’20 were named to the all-NESCAC second team and will also both be returning to the roster. Likewise, Caitlin Berreitter ’20 who currently holds the record for runs in a career (92), is also returning for her senior season. Head Coach Stephanie Hartquist will be returning after being named NESCAC Softball Coach of the Year in her first season last year. The Continentals will start their season in Florida, playing their first 13 games there.
Baseball
The Hamilton men’s baseball team is coming off of a 16–16 season. Despite losing eight seniors, the Continentals’ baseball team has two all-NESCAC selections returning to their roster from the 2019 season. Ethan Wallis ’21 was Hamilton’s biggest offensive weapon in the 2019 season. He was fourth in the NESCAC in on-base percentage (.477) and slugging percentage (.553) and eighth in batting average (.359). Gavin Schaefer-Hood ’21 pitched the most innings for the Continentals last season, and ended the season with a 7–2 record. Schaefer-Hood was eighth in the NESCAC with a 2.84 ERA. In addition, the Continentals will also be counting on Jacob Han ’21 and Matt Zaffino ’21, who both finished the 2019 season batting over .300. The baseball team begins their season at home at the Loop Road Athletic Conference on March 7 before heading to Florida to play 13 games there.
Men’s and Women’s Golf
This fall, both men’s and women’s golf qualified for the NESCAC championships held this spring. The women’s team placed 4th out of 6 and hopes to climb higher in the ranking at the championships. Allie LeeHoffman ’23 and Maddie Hong ’23 led the team, tying for 16th place out of 33 total golfers. LeeHoffman and Hong look to be top performers again for the Continentals in April. To complete their four person team for the championships will be Emily Moy ’22, who finished in 19th place at the qualifiers, and Molly Healey ’22 in 20th place. The men also hope to continue their success this spring, after placing 3rd of 10 teams in October. On the men’s team, Jack McKeon ’22 and Billy Geach ’23 tied for first on the team and fifth place out of 49 golfers. The two of them look to beat their 3-over 147 score from the qualifying round this April. Sophomores Jack Habeeb ’22 and Jason Healy ’22 also look to improve upon their 151 and 152 scores, respectively. The championships will be held at Williams College’s Taconic Golf Club on April 25 and 26.
Men’s and Women’s Track and Field
Men’s track will have a lot of momentum going into the spring, following their strong winter season. Senior Ty Kunzman ’20 looks to be the force for the Continentals’ field events. He has won first place in the weight throw at all 5 meets during the winter season. For distance events, the Continentals will look to Lucas Wright ’21 to continue his current success on the outdoor track. Just last weekend, Wright broke his own facility record in the 800-meter-run in a time of 1:55:53. Freshman Corey Jones ’23 looks to be a breakout star for the sprinters this spring in the 200-meter-dash. On the women’s team, the underclassmen look especially promising for this upcoming season. For the distance women, sophomores Liza Greene ’22, Mia Schiel ’22, Kate Labosky ’22, and first-year Katie Jenkinson ’23 look strong following their second place DMR finish on Feb. 8. First-year Madison Monroe ’23 has had a strong indoor season in the 500-meter-dash and will likely be a force for the sprinters in 2020. Lastly, Andrea Shipton ’22 looks to continue her success from last season in the pole-vault. Both teams will host their first outdoor home meet on Saturday, April 4 on the Pritchard Track.
