The Super Bowl is almost upon us. Super Bowl 57 between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles, is set to kickoff at 6:30 pm on February 12th and looks to be an exciting matchup, if not an unexpected one.
Both teams are the number one seeds in their respective conferences and thus were favorites to reach the big game. In addition, due to their stellar regular season records, the Chiefs and Eagles had a bye for the first round of the playoffs and home field advantage in the two games they did play. Even so, both teams faced plenty of challenges in getting to the game and this matchup has many interesting storylines.
Kelce-bowl:
This game marks the first time that two brothers will play against each other in a super bowl as the Chiefs Travis and the Eagles Jason Kelce will face off with the Lombardi trophy on the line. While the brothers will not be on the field at the same time, they both play integral roles in their teams success, Travis as the Chiefs top receiving threat and Jason as the Eagles best interior blocker. It will be interesting to see if some brotherly competition increases their level of play in one of the biggest games in either’s career.
Mahomes vs Hurts:
The two quarterbacks in this game have had stellar seasons and both are MVP candidates. Patrick Mahomes is widely recognized as the best QB in the league and is making his third super bowl appearance in four years as a starter. Mahomes possesses incredible arm strength and accuracy and has a knack for making would-be tacklers look silly.
Mahomes also has a knack for making seemingly impossible plays happen when his team needs it most. Hurts, who burst onto the scene this year in his second full year as a starter. Hurts has shown great accuracy and decision making this year in addition to being one of the strongest and best running quarterbacks in the league. While he is less proven than Mahomes, Hurts has flourished throughout the season and the playoffs so far and looks to continue his run to a super bowl win in his first career appearance. Watching how both quarterbacks battle throughout the game will be interesting to watch.
Andy Reid vs old team:
Another interesting storyline ahead of this matchup is Chiefs head coach Andy Reid facing his former team with a championship on the line. Reid, who has excelled in his 10 seasons as the Chiefs head coach, spent the previous 14 years in that same role for the Eagles, where he led them to the franchises second Super Bowl appearance, a game that they lost 24–21 to the New England Patriots.
While he has had nothing but success in KC, Reid was fired by the Eagles after a 4–12 campaign that owner Jeffrey Lurie called “embarrassing”. Therefore while the current Eagles are completely different from the team that Reid coached, there is certainly still bad blood between Reid and Lurie and both would likely savor the opportunity to steal a championship away from the other.
