Dear Hamilton Community,
Many of us on
The Spec
staff either worked on newspapers in high school, or had a strong interest, or curiosity in journalism, creative writing and editing. Many of us joined
The Spec
to develop these skills, meet new friends, or learn new journalism skills to enter the field in the future. While a keen draw in applying to Hamilton College as a high school senior is Hamilton’s robust emphasis on writing, we lack a journalism concentration or course of study.
Our communications department, writing center, OCC and other outlets of communication sources draw us students to media and writing, but are only tangentially related to journalism. Though we are required to take three writing intensives (and many take even more), some, especially us at
The Spec
, are disappointed in not being able to take courses that empower strictly journalistic writing. Albeit all writing styles are related, journalistic writing development comes from practice and repetition outside of class time.
Yesterday,
The Spectator
opened applications for Fall 2022 for the positions of staff writer, copy editor, photographer and illustrator roles. We are not the only way to get involved in journalism at Hamilton, but if you are at all interested, we encourage you to apply. If not applying to
The Spectator
, there are numerous other great publications that will help develop journalism skills as well.
As aforementioned, what Hamilton lacks in journalistic development is made up for in the emphasis on writing and communication. We at
The Spec
are here to bridge that gap and offer help if you are curious about the field. We will be offering alumni talks, advice from experienced members and opportunities to get involved. If interested at all, we strongly encourage you to apply.
All the best,
The Spectator

9/8. A May 5 story from the last issue of the 2021–2022 school year covering an event hosted by Hamilton’s Center for Intersectional Feminism included three images provided to our news team by the CIF. Among these images, one photo of the event appeared on the front page which should have received the specific photographer credit of Gabriel Bit-Babik ’25 of
The Monitor
. This clarification was brought to our attention after the release of our final issue of the school year, and with the release of our first issue, it is important to us that we address all such clarifications. In addition to this statement appearing in both the print and online versions, we have attempted to address this error by editing the online version of last May’s issue to include the appropriate attribution.
