The first and only all-women band on Hamilton College’s campus recently announced the date of their debut concert. On April 27, Yonic Youth will perform publicly for the first time at Funktion II, an upcoming event in the Annex featuring many student bands. Band members include Sara Jadbadaie ’21,Ona Griffin ’18, Isabel Royer ’20, Sadye Bobbette ’21, and Joyce Lee ’20. Recently, the group’s instagram, @y.onicyouth, featured Royer and Lee singing an original song, “I Gotta Know,” at the SPAC Coffeehouse in the Events Barn. The group features Jadbadaie on guitar, Griffin on the drums, Royer as the lead vocalist, Bobbette on bass, and Lee on the piano.
The band’s logo is a green apple, intentionally paying homage to the green apple featured on the mural in McEwen Dining Hall. The green apple also remains an emblem of Kirkland College, hence the street name Green Apple Way and the fruit’s feature on the wall of McEwen. Many passersby have commented on the yonic quality of the apple on the wall, and the band members have harnessed the image as a symbol of empowerment to represent their group.
Kirkland College opened in 1968 as an all-women’s school adjacent to Hamilton College, which was all-male at the time. The President of Hamilton at the time was Robert McEwen, for whom the dining hall is named. He was instrumental in the founding of Kirkland College as an all-women’s counterpart to Hamilton.
With a broader curriculum than Hamilton, Kirkland offered courses in the arts, creative writing, and the social sciences. The green apple on the crest represents the fruits of student’s knowledge.
Yonic Youth continues in Kirkland College’s tradition, both in its homage to the green apple and its all-female membership.
Yonic Youth’s debut is much-anticipated on campus, as many students have expressed disappointment in the lack of female respresentation in student bands.More information about them can be found on their Instagram, @y.onicyouth.
