The men’s hockey team (3–5 overall, 2–3 NESCAC) earned their second conference win of the season against Williams College at Hamilton’s annual Citrus Bowl game on Friday, Dec. 6. Williams was ranked #13 nationally at the time by the USHCO.
Since their tough season opening 5–2 loss to Amherst College on Saturday, Nov. 16, the Continentals beat Wesleyan University and narrowly lost to nationally-ranked #8 Trinity College.
The Citrus Bowl was the team’s fifth home game of the 2019–20 season. It is usually the most highly-attended men’s hockey match, and the team diligently prepared for their tough NESCAC opponent.
The scoreless first period featured 26 total shots by Hamilton players and 21 from Williams. Anthony Tirabassi ’20 started at goalie for Hamilton and made eight saves in this period. He finished with 16 in total for his first shutout of the season.
The first and only goal of the game was scored with around two and a half minutes left in the second period. Stephen Cochrane ’20 passed the puck to Sterling Bray ’20, who then quickly passed to Sean Allen ’21.
Bray and Allen both charged towards Williams’ goal. Bray’s took the first shot, which was saved by Williams’ goalie. However, Allen was able to get the rebound past him for the eventual game-winning goal. It was Allen’s first goal of the season.
With only over a minute left in the third period, the goalie for Williams substituted off the ice to give them an extra skater. The Ephs only ended up making four shots on goal in this period, however, all of which were saved by Tirabassi. Hamilton ended up with 27 total shots on goal, compared to 16 by Williams. They also won 37 faceoffs to Williams’ 28.
The Continentals are now tied for fifth in the conference with 13 regular season NESCAC match-ups left. Four of these will be on the road during winter break. Their next match will be against Skidmore College at the Clinton Arena on Friday, Jan. 3 at 7:00 P.M.
