BOO!
Happy Halloween to all! While some over-eager students may have begun celebrating the holiday last weekend,
The Spectator
would like to make abundantly clear that Halloweekend is this weekend, beginning on Thursday, the 31st, Halloween. We’d encourage you all to support the spirit of the season by decorating your living spaces with pumpkins and spiderwebs, indulging in a bit of Halloween candy and saying hi to the local kids trick-or-treating on campus.
You’re all in for a treat — there are so many fun events coming your way this weekend: On Friday, make sure to swing by the Campus Art Festival to celebrate campus creativity around the elections. Watch out for emails from Sadove about food trucks, performances, and swag drops. At 7:30 p.m., head over to Wellin Hall Schambach Center to watch night one of the Fall Dance Concert, which will continue into Saturday as well. Speaking of Saturday, if you’ve read Chain-Gang All-Stars by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah with Know Thy Shelf, make sure to join the book club meeting at 12 p.m. in LIST 227. If you’re feeling like you haven’t released a good scream in a while, release some mid-semester stress by cheering on the Men’s Rugby team at their championship game against St. Lawrence at 1:00 p.m. on Minor Field.
While there are an abundance of exciting activities to indulge in this weekend, we hope you all find some well-deserved time to prioritize yourselves as we head deeper into this election season. Many people within the Hamilton community and beyond are understandably stressed about Tuesday’s election. Whether it is fears of political violence, doubt over what the result will mean for the future of the country or fear over what the election results will mean for crucial personal liberties, stress about the election’s result is far from unfounded. While there is only so much we as individuals can do — at least at this moment — to control for the impacts of Tuesday, we can look after ourselves. Please, take the time you need to look out for yourself, and to take care of your friends and loved ones. Maybe have a drink or two Tuesday night, if you’re so inclined.
While much of the affairs of the geo-political world are far beyond our control, we do each have a voice. But that voice only exists if you choose to use it.
The Spectator
implores all members of the Hamilton community to make their voices heard by voting, at all levels of the political process. Remember that no vote is a wasted vote. If you still have not developed a plan to vote, it’s not too late to do so. Figure out the rules for your state; you may still be able to request a mail ballot, but if not, see if you can register to vote in Upstate New York. Do it — it matters.
Trick or Treat,
The Spectator
