As the semester comes to a close,

The Spectator

would like to recognize the hard work of Madeleine Maher, who served as an Editor in Chief beginning in the spring of 2017 and continuing through this semester.

During her tenure, Maddy fostered close relationships with the entire staff — ranging from section editors to production editors to individual writers and photographers. She led

The Spectator

with a clear vision and a cool head, often tamping down otherwise heated editorial meetings — meetings which were often inflamed by me, her co-Editor in Chief.

A peek behind the scenes of

’s weekly production process reveals section editors frantically writing and recruiting articles to fill their pages, Production Editors working to polish these articles, and collaboration on new, meaningful ideas for the content of upcoming issues, as well as the navigation of unforeseen crises as they come. Maddy, along with myself, oversaw all of this and more.

Maddy has been on

The Spectator

editorial board since her sophomore year when she was an Opinion Editor. It was Maddy who taught me the basics, as I succeeded her in this position. These years of experience enabled Maddy to do it all. Her time on staff gifted her with a wealth of experience in writing, design, and personnel management — a well-roundedness which was undoubtedly reflected in each week’s edition.

Maddy’s clear-headed and thoughtful nature, along with her journalism credentials, both from

The Spectator

and publications off the Hill, prompted her to consistently solicit feedback from the staff in its entirety before making a decision. She led without the brashness and literal volume that can sometimes accompany the Editor in Chief position, instead opting to listen, collaborate, and discuss, which created a workspace of professionalism and camaraderie.

Spectator

Wednesday’s will feel a bit emptier without Maddy incessantly reviewing every aspect of the paper until at least 4:00 AM. Her friendship, guidance, and distinct humor will be greatly missed.
