Halloween is hitting Hamilton’s campus hard. Students that have no Halloween plans for this weekend need only take a look at the posters lining the balcony in Commons to fill their schedules; HAVOC’s costume-themed dodgeball tournament, Trust Treat, the Halloween Hustle 5K, and Halloween Fest are all options for students to get in their fair share of candy eating and adult dress-up. For those more interested in staying in bed, Netflix is featuring a range of top-notch horror flicks that can bring the Halloween spirit right to your bedroom.
While the holiday is certainly an excuse for college students to embrace their inner child, retaining some maturity in the costume selection process is a must. Before slipping into that overpriced, plastic Party City dress, it is a good idea to ask yourself whether this is a costume or a racial or cultural stereotype. Do you really want your mom seeing that Facebook photo of you in a sombrero and fake mustache? Probably not. However, there is no need to worry — choosing an idea out of thousands of perfectly inoffensive costume ideas is quite simple with a touch of consideration. Stay spooky, Hamilton, and Happy Halloween!
