Dear Charles,
Although your tenure as a student on the Hill and Editor-in-Chief of
The Spectator
is coming to an end, you have left a strong legacy of intellectualism, attention to detail, and care for the campus community that is sure to grow only stronger in the years to come.
First as an editor of the Opinion section, then as Managing Editor, and finally as Editor-in-Chief, you have demonstrated a propensity for critical thought and honest discourse both in the pages of the newspaper and in casual conversations with the staff. With you at the helm, Wednesday nights in the office were always lively and filled with engaging conversation.
When you assumed the role of Editor-in-Chief, you made a point to focus on improving the quality of the reporting and writing skills in every section. The results of these efforts can be seen on
The Spectator
’s front page, in each section, and in our online content. You raised the expectations for yourself and the staff without sacrificing the student-led nature of the paper that makes it a valuable contribution to the Hamilton community.
Staff members share memories of debating issues in the week’s Opinion section with you over dinner, of watching sports highlights while simultaneously copy editing pages of articles, and of a sense of pride in the quality of the paper each week.
As readers will see in your article on page 6, you remain dedicated to the betterment of campus even as you prepare to leave it. Rather than shying away from the (many) controversial topics that arose this year, you embraced the challenge and furthered the conversation on issues like Paul Gottfried’s visit to campus, the PUB POWER movement, and the deaths of community members. The example you set was clear, consistent, and emulated by many.
You will certainly be missed next year, but there is no doubt that, in addition to occasional return visits to campus, your presence will be felt in the work you put into
The Spectator
over the last three years.
Given your plans to continue with journalistic pursuits in the coming years, we wish you all the best and are confident that you will find success and fulfillment in whatever area(s) you choose to focus your attention and work ethic.
It has been a great three years with you at the
Spec
. Thank you, again, for all you brought to this publication and to the College.
Sincerely,
The Spectator
Staff
