Both the men’s and women’s golf teams had tremendous fall seasons. Both were able to cap off their respective seasons by earning an opportunity to win the NESCAC Championship in the spring after making it through their qualifier tournaments. The teams have positioned themselves for successful spring seasons and look to earn a bid to the NCAA tournament in May.
The teams began the season at the St. Lawrence Invitational at the Oliver D. Appleton Golf Course, where they both finished in 3rd place. The women were led by Maddie Hong ’23 and Allie LeeHoffman ’23, who shot 154 and 155 respectively in their first tournament as Continentals.
The men were led by Jack Habeeb ’22, who shot a first round two-under par-70, and then followed it up with an even par round of 72 for the tournament to finish in second place individually.
The women’s team then won their second tournament of the year at the William Smith Invitational at Clifton Springs Country Club. Emily Moy ’22 led the team to victory after narrowly losing the individual tournament in a playoff. Strong performances also came from Hong, who shot 160, and Sophia Archos ’21, who shot 161.
The second tournament of the year for the men’s team was held at the Ralph Myhre Golf Course at Middlebury’s Duke Nelson Invitational. The team was again led by Habeeb, who shot 144 for the tournament. Brent Schoeller ’21 also impressed with a 149 for the tournament, and Jason Healy ’22 had a terrific second round of even par-71 to help the Continentals to a second day score of 293. The team finished in 5th place with a two-day score of 599.
The women then travelled to the Mount Holyoke Invitational at The Orchards Golf Club, where they finished in 6th place.
LeeHoffman had the highest scores of 81 and 80 for a two-day total of 161. Molly Healey ’22 and Hong also helped the team with two-day scores of 165 and 166, respectively.
The men were next onto Williams to compete in the Williams Fall Invitational at Taconic Golf Club, where they tied for 8th out of 25 teams. It was another great weekend for Habeeb, who lost in a playoff to last year’s national champion Sam Goldenring from Williams after shooting a two-under 69 in the first round and a one-over 72 in the second. Schoeller and Jack McKeon ’22 shot 154 and 156 for the tournament, respectively.
The following weekend, the women hit the green at the Ralph Myhre Golf Course, where they played in the George Phinney Classic. The team finished in 6th place and was again led by LeeHoffman, who had a second round of 76. Moy and Hong also added valuable contributions, shooting 167 and 168, respectively. The women competed in the NESCAC Championship Qualifier the following weekend at Taconic Golf Club, hosted by Williams College.
The men were next at the Sandy Burr Country Club, where Tufts University hosted the NESCAC Championship Qualifier; the top four teams qualified for the Championship in the spring. The team finished 3rd out of 10 teams to qualify for the Championship and were led by McKeon and Billy Geach ’23, who both shot 147.
The women finished 4th at the NESCAC Championship Qualifier to guarantee their own spot for the spring championship. The team was once again led by Hong and LeeHoffman, who both shot 167.
The men will be back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at the annual Ekwanok Tournament at the Ekwanok Country Club in Vermont. There, they will compete against Middlebury College, Trinity College, and Williams College.
