On Friday, Oct. 25, the Campus Activities Board (CAB) will host its annual Fall Concert. Indie-pop singer-songwriter Carlie Hanson will be the opener, and rapper Denzel Curry will headline the event.
Hanson was born in Onalaska, Wisconsin on May 18, 2000 and grew up in La Crosse. Hanson got her big break when she uploaded a cover of herself singing “Pillowtalk” to win tickets to a Zayn Malik concert. From there, she worked with producers in Canada to make music, which led to her meeting other songwriters and her manager.
Hanson’s first album
Junk
debuted on June 7, 2019. The album consists of 5 tracks, including “Back in My Arms” and “WYA.” Some of Hanson’s most popular songs include “Us” and “Numb.” The single that Hanson is most well-known for is “Only One,” a nostalgic pop song where Hanson laments over a past love. The song was so successful that pop singer Taylor Swift added it to her favorite songs playlist.
CAB Acoustic Coffeehouse coordinator Lauren Troy ’20 is particularly looking forward to Hanson’s set.
“Don’t get me wrong, I’m very excited for Denzel Curry, but I am especially looking forward to Carlie Hanson’s opening performance,” said Troy. “As CAB’s Acoustic Coffeehouse coordinator, I really appreciate the smaller or lesser known artists, and I personally believe that Hanson is on the rise. At only 19 years old, her music is catchy and fun while also touching on serious emotions and LGBTQ+ issues.”
Curry was born in Carol City, Florida on February 16, 1995. During his childhood, Curry listened to a variety of hip hop, rap, and rock music with his family. They introduced him to artists such as Public Enemy, Tupac, and rappers from New Orleans, Atlanta, and Miami. He also listened to the radio frequently with his brother, which exposed him to artists like Pantera, Bad Brains, Metallica, and Slayer.
As a teenager, Curry rapped at his high school and used software like Audacity to make music and launch his career. Significant factors that helped make Curry famous include his use of SoundCloud, rapper and record producer SpaceGhostPurrp’s mentorship, and Curry’s single “Ultimate” (2015).
Curry’s albums include
Nostalgic 64
(2013),
32 Zel
(2015),
Imperial
(2016),
13
(2017),
TA13BOO
(2018), and
ZUU
(2019). Some of Curry’s most popular songs include “Ultimate”, “CLOUT COBAIN | CLOUT CO13A1N,” “RICKY,” and “This Life.” So far, Curry has had two Billboard 200 appearances, with
TA13OO
peaking at #28 on Aug. 11, 2018, and
ZUU
peaking at #32 on June 15, 2019.
According to CAB Publicity Coordinator Grace Halligan ’22, CAB Concert Coordinators Julia Opatrny ’20 and Jonah Bauer ’22 consulted the CAB E-Board during the planning process of narrowing down and selecting the headliner.
Halligan said, “I am most looking forward to the show because of how excited students have been! After great shows last year, CAB wants to keep up the high quality shows and I think that Denzel is right on par.”
The Fall Concert will be held in the Annex. Doors open at 7:00 PM, and the show will start at 7:30 PM. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $10 with cash or Hillcard.
