Men’s and women’s tennis concluded exemplary seasons on Sunday, April 28, dropping their games against Wesleyan but coming away with winning records. Men’s tennis (11–5 overall, 1–5 NESCAC) was perfect in non-conference play and at their peak in late March and early April, had a 9-game win streak. Women’s tennis (11–4 overall, 3–3 NESCAC) wrapped up their season at #39 in the ITA/Oracle Division III rankings for women’s tennis.
Men’s tennis started the season with a difficult opponent, the #2 Middlebury College, and they lost 0–9. Women’s tennis entered the season unranked and also started off against #6 Middlebury College. They saw the same outcome as the men’s team and lost 0–9. The team eked out a win in several key conference games, including their Senior Day on Saturday, April 20 against Trinity College. The game was a tight 5–4 win, and helped to even the team’s NESCAC record to .500. In singles matches, four players had over 10 wins: Sophia Aulicino ’21 (16–6), Audrey Chor ’21 (10–6), Ajla Karabegovic ’21 (10–5), and Kat Roberts ’22 (14–3). Aulicino finished the season ranked 19th in the ITA Northeast Region singles rankings.
In doubles, Aulicino and Chor dominated with 11 wins, and Karabegovic and Roberts had an outstanding record of 11–4. Haffer and Becca Ingber ’22 paired up for a 4–1 record in the doubles as well. Haffer finished off her college career with 32 doubles wins and 41 singles wins.
Both teams are graduating two seniors, ensuring that the majority of each roster stays intact for the 2019–20 season. Men’s tennis is graduating Matthew Haas ’19 and Lars Scannell ’19 and women’s tennis is graduating Emma Weller ’19 and Jane Haffer ’19. Both teams had largely successful seasons due to the stellar performances of first years and sophomores. Both teams will begin to play again on Saturday, Sept. 8. The women will take on William Smith College in Geneva, N.Y., and the men will head to Canton, N.Y. for the St. Lawrence Fall Classic.
