From a genius that kills with a stroke of a pen to a rubber boy who dreams of becoming the Pirate King, anime challenges the imagination. The medium combines an animated style with often adult themes, whose assorted genres include comedy, drama and romance. Hamilton College’s Anime Club seeks to promote this limitless medium, inviting regular and new viewers to watch anime on Saturdays at 4 p.m.
“Anime is something everyone should know,” Vice President Judit Vagott ’26 said. For regular anime watchers, the club introduces them to fellow viewers. Attendees can then discuss the medium through the club’s Discord and post-meeting discussions. For those new to anime, meetings will often include an event — such as decorating tote bags — alongside the viewing. Students may come for the event then stay for the anime, Vagott explained.
The Anime Club’s kick-off event, “First Boba,” was on Sept. 16, where viewers drank boba and watched a romance movie which was well-received by attendees. Beyond this first meeting, President Tyrone Xue ’27
plans to offer snacks, arts-and-crafts events and themed anime sessions — for example, when the Fall 2023 anime season debuts, the club will present an anime from this new season. Xue hopes to create an anime podcast and, if the “We’re rather broke” budget allows, head to the nearby movie theater for an anime viewing.
Within club meetings, Xue prioritizes a laid-back and fun atmosphere; after all, the president identifies with the comedy genre since his jokes are “funny every once in a while.” While Xue has his own list of “God-Tier Anime,” his E-board will provide varied genres to account for students’ differing preferences. Xue also envisions the club as “Anime and beyond,” where the club will promote anime games, V-Tubers, manga and light novels in addition to anime.
For those unsure of attending the club, Vagott responds with: “You really don’t know until you’ve tried something, and then it might become a big part of your life.”
