Hamilton College’s Facilities Management team has finished installing 20 new electric car charging stations at various locations around campus. All stations are available to use free of charge for anyone in the community for a maximum of three hours at a time.
This initiative, organized by Director of Building Systems Management William Huggins, is part of the College’s continuous efforts to become a more sustainable, eco-friendly campus. Although 20 new stations represents a surplus for now, Huggins says he is confident that as the usage of electric cars increases, the stations will serve a functional purpose in preparing the College for the future and addressing the needs of the wider community.
Taking these needs into account, the Facilities Management team scouted out various spots around campus to determine where it would be best to install the charging stations. Ultimately, based on their analysis of pedestrian movement, traffic patterns, and areas with increased demand, stations were placed in the parking lots near the Office of the Dean of Students, student lots on the South side of campus, near the Campus Safety office, behind the library and Siuda House, behind the Ferguson and Skenandoa Residence Halls, and near the squash courts in the Margaret Bundy Scott Field House.
As of now, only three of the aforementioned locations have designated parking spaces exclusively for the charging stations, but as the initiative continues to grow and develop, Facilities Management is hoping to expand their resources to accommodate the increasing demand for environmentally-friendly vehicles.
In installing these car stations, the College hopes to recognize the importance of shifting to address and adapt to pressing issues related to global and local climate change.
