Wellin Hall, Schambach Center
Having been referenced to as the “modern day version of “West Side Story” by the
New York Times
,
Platanos y Collard Greens
is a lighthearted yet thought-provoking play that focuses on the very relevant issues of stereotypes, prejudices, and urban myths that exist between African-Americans, West Indians, and Latinx people.
The storyline focuses on Freeman, an African-American man, and Angelita, a Latina woman, who both fall in the unfortunate but real situation of loving one another but being confronted with cultural and racial prejudices. The play follows the two college freshmen through their journey of overcoming the backlash from those in their surroundings.
With a mix of humorous jokes and references to current day politics,
Platanos y Collard Greens
will provide food for thought when considering real-world problems regarding differences between culture and race.
Between the Lines Productions
, a theatre group based in Brooklyn, New York, will bring their talents to the Hill and perform their version of the critically acclaimed play.
The event will be hosted by The Black and Latinx Student Union in cooperation with the Hamilton College Theatre Department, Africana Studies Department, Days-Massolo Center, First Year Experience, and Student Assembly.
The event is free and open to the public.
