On Friday, July 1, 2023, Tina Hall, the Christian A. Johnson Excellence in Teaching Professor of Literature and Creative Writing, will take on the role of Associate Dean of Faculty. She will replace Nathan Goodale, Professor of Anthropology, who has served in this position since 2018.
Hall came to Hamilton as a visiting professor in 2001. Speaking of her experience coming to the Hill for the first time, Hall shared, “I started in a visiting position and fell in love with the community. The students were (and are!) extraordinary, and the faculty and staff were so welcoming. It was such a gift to be able to work with students from their first year right through to their senior projects, something I hadn’t experienced at the big universities where I’d taught before coming here. So, when the tenure-track job opened up, I leapt at the chance to apply and feel extremely lucky that I ended up with the position. That sense of community and the pleasure of having a shared commitment to thinking deeply about the world and our place in it has only gotten stronger over the years.”
In her time at Hamilton, Hall has been involved in several administrative roles. Since 2022, Hall has served as the Chair of the Literature and Creative Writing Department. Hall has also been the Chair of the Committee on Appointments and been involved with several other campus organizations, including the Middle States Accreditation Steering Committee, the Harassment and Sexual Misconduct Board, the Committee on Academic Policy, the Student Fellowships Committee, the Dean of Faculty Search Committee, the Judicial Board and the Committee on Admissions and Financial Aid.
Hall stated, “Serving on a variety of committees over the years has been a really valuable way for me to learn how the institution works and to share in keeping it functioning and evolving. Service work can be enormously time consuming, but it has been essential in broadening my understanding of the various parts of the college and has afforded me the chance to work and collaborate with people from across the campus, which has been really fun.”
As Hall steps into the role of Associate Dean of Faculty, she will be working with Ngonidzashe Munemo, the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty, and Penny Yee, Professor of Psychology and Associate Dean of Faculty. “The Dean of Faculty Office supports faculty in their pedagogical, scholarly, creative, and leadership development through a variety of approaches,” according to the Office website. As an Associate Dean of Faculty, Hall will specifically “oversee personnel matters such as recruitment, reappointment, tenure, and promotion procedures, as well as curricular development and review.”
When asked about her outlook on taking on this position, Hall shared, “I’m most excited about continuing the work of building and sustaining the community that has been such a joy to me over the past 20 years. I look forward to supporting faculty members’ research and teaching, and I hope I can, in some small part, help others to feel as nurtured intellectually and socially as I have been during my time at Hamilton.”
