Dear
Spectator
Editorial Board,
Six months ago I wrote to you my reflections following the terrible Tree of Life Synagogue shooting. “It could happen again,” was the concern I heard repeatedly from frightened members of the American Jewish community.
And, then, it happened again.
This time, at a Chabad House.
Yesterday, I was called by a reporter from the LA Times. He was writing a story on Chabad’s network, to highlight its reach and growth. (The full article is here:
https://www.latimes.com/nation/la-na-san-diego-synagogue-shooting-chabad-20190428-story.html)
Due to the religious Shabbat observance which prohibits use of electronics, I only learned of the tragedy on Saturday when concerned community members knocked at our door to make sure we were okay.
We are shaken.
Chabad is a relatively tight-knit international community of some tens of thousands. I know the Rabbi’s sister, nephews and other relatives.
And, it could literally happen again. Anywhere.
Like all Chabad Houses (there are over 1,000 in the US alone, and many more thousands in over 100 countries), Chabad of Poway is made up of a denominationally eclectic group of worshippers. Progressives, traditionalists, and everything in between, come together at Chabad. And all are validated and welcomed.
And, that’s what was attacked.
Devorah and I were inspired to establish a Chabad in Clinton for locals and Hamilton students for this very reason.
In response to terrible tragedies, we try to add in light and love. For ourselves and for the world.
These tragedies happen because people don’t talk to each other. As one member of Chabad of Poway said to reporters, “The attacker didn’t know me, but he came to kill me. Had he met me, he would see I’m a really nice person.”
You may not agree with your friends’ every position… but who said you need to? Chabad prides itself (not just here) in bringing together people of every persuasion.
Here’s an idea: This Friday, join Chabad at Hamilton College’s student group at Chabad House for dinner. Stand with Chabad here at Hamilton in response to a vicious attack on Jewish people at Chabad there in Poway.
Sincerely,
Rabbi Didy Waks
Chabad of Clinton
