Over Parent’s Weekend, the field hockey team braved the cold and rainy weather for an afternoon playoff game on Goodfriend Field. The nationally-ranked #14 Continentals took on the #17 Trinity College Bantams.
The game was part of the 2018 NESCAC Field Hockey Championship quarterfinals. This was the second year in a row that the Continentals have hosted the Bantams in the NESCAC playoffs.
The Bantams walked away with the victory, scoring once in each half, and exhibiting tough defense against the Continentals, keeping them scoreless.
Both Julia Booth ’19 and Brooke Talsania ’19 of the Continental’s had notable performances on Saturday’s game, exhibiting tight defensive strategy and impressive saves.
The Bantams will be opposing Middlebury on their home turf on Nov. 3.
Overall, the Continentals finished fourth in the NESCAC and also ranked third in the New England West Region of Division III of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Meanwhile, women’s soccer also participated in a NESCAC championship quarterfinal round over the weekend. Amherst hosted the Continental’s at their Hitchcock Field on a sunny Sunday afternoon. In the end, it was a close game, but the nationally ranked #16/17 Mammoths walked away with a 1–0 final victory.
Player Cat Gambino ’21 made several attempts at scoring on the Mammoth’s goal, but faced tight defense from the goalkeeper all afternoon.
The top two scorers in the NESCAC women’s soccer league were both present at the game on Sunday — on the Continental’s side, Gambino, on Amherst’s, Rubii Tamen ’19.
Taeman was named NESCAC Player of the Week by the league office on Monday afternoon, and scored the team’s only goal at the end of the second half on Sunday.
The Mammoths will advance to the semifinals next Saturday at Middlebury College.
For the second year in a row, the Continentals were the #6 in the NESCAC championship. They were also ranked #8 in the New England Region by the NCAA.
