A Star is Born
combines raw musical talent with an engaging and authentic plot to create a heartbreaking but inspirational story that pulls viewers into the world of music, and deep into the lives of the characters.
One artist’s plunge into the darkest corners of fame is complemented by another’s rise to its greatest heights, as alt-country singer Jackson Maine (Bradley Cooper) uses his own success to catapult the career of the apprehensive singer-songwriter Ally Campana (Lady Gaga). The viewers are able to see a unique love story unfold between two characters who are endearingly flawed and honest, their unlikely romance bringing a sense of reality into an industry that frequently feels artificial and unrealistic.
The characters feel real, and their relationships are genuine. Jack’s strained but loving connection with his brother and manager, Bobby, highlight the complexity of his character, making viewers feel even more connected to his story. Ally’s warm and lighthearted interactions with her father add another dimension to the film, connecting the dots between her past and her life within the storyline.
Layered on top of the foundation of believable characters and a classic yet modern storyline is good music. There is the timeless, stripped-down “Maybe it’s Time,” which showcases Bradley Cooper’s raw (and unexpected) talent. The powerful harmonies of “Shallow” show just how well the two vocalists mesh together despite artistic differences. The heartbreakingly emotional “I’ll Never Love Again” is undeniably beautiful lyrically, and serves to tie the entire story together. The film offers a soundtrack that serves not only as a supplement to the plot, but also as a collection of music that stands out on its own.
While at times heavy,
A Star is Born
is a story that inspires, whether it be about love, pursuing dreams or staying true to one’s convictions.
