Hamilton’s men’s and women’s tennis teams both had strong performances in their respective tournaments this weekend, Sept. 15 and 16. The men competed in Schenectady, N.Y and the women in Ithaca, N.Y.
In the men’s tournament that featured St. Lawrence, SUNY Oneonta, and Union College, the men reached the finals in all four singles flights, claiming the championship in flights “A” and “C.”
In flight “A,” Max Zimmerman ’21 proved himself to be the top dog of the tournament, winning all of his matches without dropping a set and improving his career singles record at the Dutchman Invite to 6–0.
Meanwhile, Joe Reiner ’22 continued an impressive start to his career at Hamilton by following up last week’s “C” flight victory at the St. Lawrence University Fall Classic with another tournament victory this weekend, capturing the “C” flight crown again with a convincing 6–4, 6–2 win over St. Lawrence’s Spencer Whitmire.
Tim Derby ’21 reached the final in the tournament’s “B” singles flight, while Lucas Suhl ’22 did the same in flight “D.”
On the women’s side, the Continentals competed at the Ithaca College Invitational, playing singles against Union College and St. Lawrence University.
Three players — Sophia Aulicino ’21, Sarah Bargamian ’22, and Audrey Chor ’21 — stood out for their singles prowess, staying undefeated for the entire weekend.
The women’s team won 8 of their 14 singles matches at the invitational, with Kat Roberts ’22 and Becca Ingber ’22 also posting victories for the Lady Continentals.
Said player Jane Haffer, “this year is all about developing our program and setting the younger girls up to do great things.”
Coach Matt Brisotti also commented about the women’s performance, “the team played strong, winning many singles and doubles against tough competition. Lately we have placed a lot of emphasis on strengthening our doubles games.”
In doubles play, the men won 7 of 12 matches, while the women posted an impressive 5–0 doubles record.
Looking forward, Coach Brisotti commented, “We will finish the fall season with the regional ITA tournament against other Division III institutions, mainly in New York and New Jersey. It is always a strong field, but we are ready for the challenge and to finish out the season strong with goals to work on for the Spring.”
